RESCUE efforts are now under way in Haiti for what is quickly emerging as one of the greatest humanitarian crises of recent times.
It has taken some time to take in the enormity of the destruction and loss of life as medical and charity organisations from around the world struggled to reach those worst hit by the powerful earthquake just days ago and reporters from around the globe sent home to us what is truly a vision of hell on earth.
Life for the poverty-stricken people of Haiti was already hard enough, now it is clearly a struggle for survival on an hour-by-hour basis as food and fresh water supplies run out.
As urgent appeals flow in from organisations worldwide struggling to cope on the ground in Haiti, we should listen carefully and do what we Irish do best in such times.
It is time to dig deep for donations and send them on with our heartfelt prayers.
