Garda calls crisis - time for answers

FOR the past week nothing else has dominated the affairs of government. The ongoing crisis regarding recorded phone calls at garda stations and the resignation of former Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan is a complete distraction from running the country for Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his cabinet.

Prior to last week, the controversy regarding garda whistleblowers continued to hinder the coalition for months on end.

Like a lingering winter cold, these related problems are proving difficult to shake off.

Open transparent information is required – urgently.

The Taoiseach claims he only learned of the recorded phone calls issue last Sunday, yet Mr Callinan informed the Attorney General last November.

Either the line of communication at senior government level is tentative at best or somebody is not telling the full story.

It's time for answers please.
