Editorial: We must do better for mums-to-be

All this week, we have heard from women who have come forward to tell how they went on to have successful pregnancies despite being told their baby was dead in the womb.

But this scandal has also affected thousands of women from all over the country whose voices we will never hear -- the women who are left wondering if their diagnosis of a miscarriage after a scan was indeed the correct one.

Of course, it must be recognised that pregnancies can, and do, sadly result in miscarriages.

And it is important to keep a sense of balance.

But until this week, we had not heard that standards of training in ultrasound needed to be improved.

We never gave a thought to the state of ultrasound equipment in our hospitals.

The only good thing that can emerge from this crisis is that new standards will be put in place.
