Editorial: We are not immune to extremists

THERE will be many surprised to learn that detectives here detained seven people as part of an international investigation into a conspiracy to murder the Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks.

He was the man who caused outrage among many Muslims after his cartoon depicting the prophet Mohammed on a dog's body was published two and half years ago.

But it is a sign of the times that people have been arrested and computers seized in Ireland in a bid to find vital clues to an alleged plot to murder the cartoonist.

It shows that we are certainly not immune to what is happening internationally.

The gardai have a Middle Eastern desk which is doing vital work on our behalf. It is comforting to know that it is monitoring developments and liaising with international forces.
