It is a shameful situation that there are hundreds of thousands of properties lying empty around the country thanks to the Govern-ment's failure to manage the property bubble.
Some of the properties built during the boom times were in locations far from roads, public transport and amenities.
This should never have been allowed to happen.
Government tax incentives fuelled the building boom, and there wasn't much thought given as to who would even want or live in these properties.
The solution to the problem includes knocking down many of these perfectly good properties in ghost estates, or face having the country littered with homes that nobody will ever live in.
It is a sobering thought that resources, in these straitened times, will have to be used for such a purpose. Lessons must be learned from this debacle to ensure this never happens again.
