Taoiseach Brian Cowen had the opportunity to bring new blood and ideas into the Cabinet, but he blew it with his cautious reshuffle. He passed up on the opportunity to bring some talented backbenchers forward, instead opting for minimal changes to his ministerial line-up.
What a shame that he didn't seize the moment and really shake up the status quo that exists within the Government.
His lack of vision in how he has restructured his Cabinet doesn't inspire confidence in how the Government will proceed with tackling the economic crisis.
It appears that he had awarded loyalty by promoting those who he is close to, but that leaves little room for others to break through the ranks.
It remains to be seen if the newly named ministers and departments will be any more effective than the ones they are replacing.
