The huge outpouring of grief for broadcaster Gerry Ryan is almost overwhelming. Even people who were not fans or who rarely, if ever, listened to his shows, are caught up in the shock and sorrow surrounding his sudden death.
Each day since his death more and more people have come forward with stories of how he helped them through personal difficulty, from relationship and parenting problems to abject grief and despair.
Thousands of others have sent texts, signed books of condolence and 50,000 people have offered their sympathy on Facebook.
Who could have imagined that a broadcaster would have touched the lives of so many in such a positive and forceful way?
We are just starting to realise what an impact this man had on the plain people of Ireland.
His last journey may be tomorrow but his presence and influence will continue to be felt for a long time to come.
