Editorial: Papal visit is wasted opportunity

IT is a real shame that Pope Benedict XVI did not use his historic visit to Britain to do more to address the concerns of victims of clerical abuse.

His visit had generated controversy even before it began, as British taxpayers moaned about how much the trip was costing them.

But despite everything, he has managed to bring out huge crowds, and there clearly is an appetite among the faithful to see the 83-year-old Pontiff.

That is why it is a pity that he hasn't seized the opportunity to reach out more to abuse victims. He has not yet met their demand of acknowledging that there had been a systematic cover-up by the Vatican.

The Pope must listen to those who have been so hurt by the Church.
