Editorial: New taxes and charges are unfair

Is there to be no end to the amount of crippling charges and stealth taxes being imposed on hard-pressed homeowners?

Families will have to shell out up to an extra €1,000 a year after new measures were announced in the Finance Bill. Heating oil, gas prices and tolls on the M50 are just some of the things that will cost more as a result.

It's the last thing that people facing a combination of mortgage hikes and higher income taxes needed to be hit with.

The Budget was only two months ago, and yet the Government keeps coming back to hard-pressed workers demanding more.

How do they imagine that these measures will help restore public spending? People are holding on to what little they have because they do not know what is coming down the tracks.

It is very unfair on those already struggling to get by.
