Editorial: Millions of friends will miss Gerry

TRIBUTES continue to pour in for Gerry Ryan today. As a book of condolence opens in the Mansion House the amount of people who have come forward to describe Gerry as a friend is immense.

It is a measure of the man and his personality that so many people think of Gerry as a pal. Gerry was due back on the radio tomorrow morning and it is then, at 9.05am that we will truly feel his loss.

Everywhere, people who may never have met him are feeling a sense of mourning at his passing.

Gerry has so many friends in the worlds of broadcasting and showbiz, media and business, but it is the countless ordinary folk whom he may never have even met who would have mattered the most to Gerry.

But it is, of course, his family, Morah and the kids, who are closest in our thoughts this evening, as well as Gerry's partner Melanie. They are preparing to say goodbye a last time to the brilliant broadcaster who will be buried in Dublin later this week.
