Editorial: Leaders still living in land of luxuries

OUR revelations today that millions of euro have been spent on upgrades at Leinster House will anger many taxpayers. At a time when families are struggling to pay bills and Government levies, our politicians, it seems, are intent on maintaining their own luxurious workspace.

The Herald has learned that almost €9m has been spent on works at the Dail between 2003 and 2009.

Granted, many of these were "signed off" on during the boom years, but again, many will see this as typical of the way the fruits of those years were spent by those charged with safeguarding the nation's financial future.

Even as the Government warned last summer of cuts to social welfare, close on half-a-million euro was still found for works at Leinster House.

Taxpayers will have little sympathy with "value for money" claims for renovations that included a €1m self-service restaurant.
