Editorial: Is there any appetite for a vote now?

THE prospect of a general election has loomed closer with the resignation of former Fianna Fail TD Jim McDaid.

The Government's majority is now wafer thin and Mr McDaid suggests there should be a general election called before the Budget.

But is there any real appetite just now for a major political upset with the harshest budget in the history of the State about to be revealed?

The public is terrified at the prospect of a four year savings plan and €15bn in cuts.

Whoever holds the reins of power will still have to deal with Ireland's grave economic problems.

It is absolutely imperative we get through this dark period and offer our citizens some hope for the future.
