Editorial: Have a safe and happy Easter break

TENS of thousands will be on the roads this Easter weekend. With fine weather forecast, many will head for beaches and lakes, determined to make the most of Monday's Bank Holiday.

Over the last two years 13 people have been killed and 33 seriously injured on Irish roads over the Easter and May bank holiday period.

Speed and driving under the influence of alcohol continue to be the main causes of fatal accidents and road death figures are already up on this time last year.

The message is not getting through: Gardai say there was a noticeable increase in drink driving and speeding over the St Patrick's Day holiday period.

Sunny weather can lull people into a false sense of security and safety near water should be a priority. An average of 150 die in accidental drownings every year.

Enjoy the weekend but let us try to do so safely.
