Editorial: Gardai must not break public bond

Members of the public are bracing themselves for yet more pain, after the gardai became the latest group to come out in favour of some form of industrial action.

The work-to-rule campaign being waged by the public sector is already affecting people in different ways, and it now remains to be seen what measures the gardai will take.

Although more than half of the membership of the Garda Representative Association did not vote in a survey to gauge support for taking industrial action over pay cuts, a large majority who did vote were in favour of limited action.

The relationship between the gardai and citizens is an important one, and it is imperative that any action taken does not damage this in any way.

Let us hope that there are talks sooner rather than later to sort this out.
