Editorial: Fears rise as gangsters get rockets

GARDAI may have prevented gangland violence on an unprecedented level by their seizure of a cache of weapons this week which included rocket launchers.

It is believed that 'Fat' Freddie Thompson's gang planned to wipe out an entire rival outfit in a rocket launcher ambush.

The gardai deserve great credit for their success in this operation.

However, the fact that a gang managed to amass such weapons is sinister and alarming. The type of rocket launchers found in Kildare are capable of destroying a tank or demolishing a home.

It doesn't bear thinking about what would happen if such weapons were directed towards a pub or a crowded venue where people have congregated, not to mention what would happen if they were let off in residential areas.

Those who amass such weapons would not be worried about innocent people being hurt by their actions.
