Editorial: Fear grips city in new gang killing

THE MURDER of Stephen Byrne in Dublin city has left a local community in shock. Byrne, a serial criminal, was gunned down in broad daylight on the side of the road.

He clearly knew his life was in danger. As he left his house, he reportedly asked passers-by if the coast was clear.

But the manner of his killing has heightened fears in the Sheriff Street area. Innocent bystanders could easily have been caught up in the incident. And, of course, there is also the trauma suffered by people who witness such shocking events.

Following the cold-blooded killing, armed gardai are once again patrolling the streets of Dublin 1.

The Emergency Response Unit has been deployed to quell tensions in the local feud.

While the rival gangs had been relatively quiet of late, the uneasy peace has well and truly been shattered now. Yesterday's murder was the fourth gang related killing in just over a fortnight .
