Editorial: Action must be taken on headshops

It's time for the Government to immediately clamp down on the kind of substances being sold in headshops. The shops, which specialise in legal alternatives to illegal substances are springing up all over the country.

And some even stay open till 4am to cater for late night revellers.

It seems bizarre that we have all sorts of regulations in place regarding tobacco and its sale to younger people -- but we don't apply the same stringent rules to the substances sold in headshops.

The sale of legal highs is being monitored by the gardai, but head-shops are operating within the law and the substances on sale are not illegal.

But the concern is that young people could feel tempted to dabble in these highs precisely because they are legal and easily available.

Let's not wait for a tragedy to take action.
