Editorial: Act now on motorway blackspot

WE report today on a new motorway open for just three months which has already become an accident blackspot.

The new section of the M9 Crookstown to Castledermot motorway had five accidents recorded in just one day.

A 22-year-old man was killed on the road on St Valentine's Day in a single-vehicle accident.

His brother and sister, who were in the car, suffered serious injuries. Both, thankfully, are now out of danger.

A meeting has already taken place involving national and local authorities to review the situation.

Gardai have said they are concerned with the volume of accidents and others have raised safety issues about the road itself.

It is vital that the causes of this spate of accidents are analysed urgently and remedial action, if needed, is carried out immediately.
