Don't confuse PPI with mortgages

THERE'S been much comment on the mis-selling of Premium Protection Insurance (PPI) recently.

I've found some people are confusing it with Mortgage Protection Insurance which is a different thing altogether. It pays off your mortgage if you die during the term, and is essential and mandatory.

PPI continues your loan repayments if you fall ill, or are made unemployed, however, it was mis-sold to people who could never make a claim, eg. home-makers, the over 65s and the self-employed.

If you fall into these categories and took out PPI on a car, personal or home loan, write to the "Compliance Officer" of the financial institution who sold it to you and demand a refund.

Failing that, contact the Financial Ombudsman at 1890 882 090.
