A young mother of two has died following a crash in which her baby son escaped serious injury.
Cathy Maguire (23) was airlifted to hospital while her one-year-old son, Calum, was taken to another hospital by ambulance. Her car was in a collision with a van on Monday morning.
She had dropped off her son, Matthew (6), at school less than an hour before the tragic accident.
Cathy briefly regained consciousness in hospital, but died later that night. Little Calum and the driver of the Nissan van were treated for minor injuries.
The crash happened at Glenmore, Riverstown, several kilometres from Dundalk.
Her husband, Seamus, and her family were being comforted today by relatives and friends at their home in Benagh, Riverstown.
Calum was in the baby seat in the back of the family's Audi A4 when the collision occurred on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road at Glenmore.
Cathy was airlifted to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, Co Down, while her son and the van driver were taken by ambulance to Drogheda.
Ms Maguire was a full-time mother to her two sons; her husband is a lorry driver.
Local people described her as a devoted wife and mother and "a lovely, quiet woman".
