Young garda dies in floods

A VALIANT young garda who drowned in last night's horrendous flooding.

The body of 25-year-old Garda Ciaran Jones was discovered close to where he was swept away by floods in Wicklow.

Elsewhere, residents were rescued by fire officers after their Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 homes were swamped by the River Dodder in the worst flooding to hit the capital since Hurricane Charlie in 1986.

Hundreds of homes had to evacuated as vast swathes of the city were under water. Today parts of the city were cut off and public transport was still badly affected.

Dundrum Town Centre remained closed after being hit by 7ft of flood water while Met Eireann and the city authorities were under fire for failing to act on the Biblical downpour.
