A garda and a female driver were injured in a two-vehicle collision last night.

The Garda Siochana Ombuds- man Commission (GSOC) is conducting an investigation into the crash which happened around seven miles outside Killarney, Co Kerry.

It occurred on the N22 Killarney-Farranfore Road near Scart Cross at around 7.45pm.

The woman, aged in her 30s, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was rushed to Kerry General Hospital.

The garda, who was the sole occupant of a garda van, also suffered injuries, but they are not believed to be as serious as those of the female driver.

A third vehicle may also have been clipped in the incident, but it is not believed anyone in this car was injured.

The road remained open last night, though one of the lanes was closed to allow for a clear-up and for an investigation to take place.

A spokesperson for GSOC confirmed last night that it had dispatched investigators to the scene.

Gardai said they had referred the incident to GSOC, which is standard procedure in such a collision.

Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6671160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111 or any garda station.

Meanwhile, a young woman died when the car she was driving left the road early yesterday morning.

The crash happened on the road from Crosskeys to Ballyjamesduff, at Carrickatober, Co Cavan. Gardai were alerted at around 7.30am.

The woman, who was alone in the car, was aged in her late 20s. She was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was removed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Navan.

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 9694570.
