Wolf Toner finally admits to €50k excess

'INKGATE' TD Aengus O Snodaigh has finally admitted that his €50,000 use of cartridges was "excessive".

O Snodaigh, dubbed 'The Wolfe Toner', received an incredible 488 print cartridges from Dail supplies -- worth an average of €130 each.

But he said that so far he has not refunded any of the expenses because, he says, he wasn't asked to.

Mr O Snodaigh claimed for the cartridges between 2007 and 2008, bringing the value of the cartridges to over €50,600.

"€50,000 is a lot of money. It was probably excessive printing at the time," he said this morning.

"The constituents in my area got a lot of information."

He insists that he has now changed the way he informs his constituents about news.

But the Sinn Fein politician says he has not been asked to fork out to cover the €50,000 figure.

"No, the Oireachtas has not as yet sought from anybody who accessed the cartridges in houses of Oireachtas in 2007 and 2008 any further payment," he said on Morning Ireland. "It may be excessive in terms of the size... but it wasn't a financial payment directly to me."

Mr O Snodaigh added that there needed to be a "fundamental overhaul" of the expenses system.

He said that if administration officials came to him and requested a payment, he would consider this.

"I said always that if the Oireachtas sought any payment from TDs who avail of the cartridges, that I would consider that at that stage," he said. Mr O Snodaigh earlier confirmed that he would pay the excess outstanding money owed to the Oireachtas for print cartridges.

This was in relation to an outstanding €3,000 bill incurred when a limit was imposed on the number of print cartridges supplied free of charge by the Houses of the Oireachtas three years ago.

He said the large amount of printing was done to "serve my constituents", adding that he often printed leaflets with "lots of colour and big pictures".
