Winter freeze to hit this weekend

MOTORISTS have been warned to expect the first blasts of winter this weekend.

PLUNGING temperatures are expected to bring frost and ice making road conditions tricky.

The mercury is set to fall to -1C in some areas tomorrow with sharp frost and very unsettled and changeable conditions all weekend.

Cold will not be the only problem as heavy showers are likely to continue and bring spot flooding to some parts.

More showers and long spells of rain are expected to move in from the Atlantic over the next few days, particularly over the southern half of the country.

Excess surface water is already causing problems in some areas with AA Roadwatch warning drivers to use dipped headlights to improve visibility and only drive through water if they know it is not too deep for their car.

The prolonged rain is expected to continue into the middle of next week.
