What is cystic fibrosis

Cystic fibrosis (CF) affects the lungs, pancreas, digestive tract and reproductive system. It damages the lungs and also makes it difficult for the body to absorb sufficient nutrition.

  • About 5pc of people carry the gene that can cause it. If both parents carry it, their baby has a 25pc chance of being born with CF. The Republic has about 1,200 people with CF.

  • More than half of people with CF in the Republic will live past 30. In the UK, about half are expected to live beyond 38.

  • See www.cfireland.ie.
