Cystic fibrosis (CF) affects the lungs, pancreas, digestive tract and reproductive system. It damages the lungs and also makes it difficult for the body to absorb sufficient nutrition.
- About 5pc of people carry the gene that can cause it. If both parents carry it, their baby has a 25pc chance of being born with CF. The Republic has about 1,200 people with CF.
- More than half of people with CF in the Republic will live past 30. In the UK, about half are expected to live beyond 38.
