West Dublin: School hopes to raise €2k

A LOCAL secondary school is hoping to raise €2,000 for the Peter McVerry Trust by hosting a football tournament in honour of a former pupil.

Students at the Colaiste Phadraig School in Lucan, west Dublin, will take part in the annual Mark O'Neill five-a-side soccer marathon over the next three days.

The event, organised by teacher Ray Cullen, is in honour of former pupil Mark O'Neill, who tragically passed away in 2007 after a brave battle with cancer.

Last year, around €1,700 was raised for Sports Fund, with a different charity being chosen every year.

Students previously raised around €2,000 for Pieta House, the centre for the prevention of self-harm or suicide which has its headquarters in Lucan.

Staff and pupils were also among the 100,000 people who took part into the annual Darkness Into Light event.
