'We're too short of cash for fireworks'

SPARKS are flying over a proposal to launch an annual fireworks display in Dun Laoghaire.

A move by a local councillor to start an annual event has been criticised as unaffordable.

Cllr Barry Saul (FG) said a similar display to London's New Years Eve Fireworks and the recent Skyfest display in Limerick, would be beneficial on the Dun Laoghaire coastline, but he had "no knowledge" of the cost. But Cllr Gerry Horkan (Fianna Fail) questioned whether the timing of the motion was appropriate since money is scarce in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council.

"I don't think it's right at a time when budgets are tight and I don't think we could afford a couple of thousand or however much it costs. It's very hard to justify. Money is scarce and we want to make sure it's spent in the right way."
