THE decision to impose a weekend car ban on one of Dublin city's main traffic routes should be reversed, a councillor said today.
Vehicles are prevented from accessing a section of Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park at weekends.
However, it is feared the move by the Office of Public Works (OPW) is the first step on the way to a total ban.
The route is used by thousands of commuters every day.
"As it stands, the OPW has rolled out a temporary plan to close it at weekends, but they are looking to close it permanently," Fianna Fail councillor David McGuinness said.
The OPW says the restriction between the Phoenix and Mountjoy roundabouts is part of the ongoing management of the amenity.
Mr McGuinness has tabled a question for next week's meeting of Fingal County Council.
