A pedestrian was killed after leaving a wedding when he was struck by a car.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the incident which happened in Castlemartyr, Co Cork early yesterday morning.

The 33-year-old man had been a guest at a wedding in Castlemartyr Resort Hotel and was walking back to the B&B where he was staying nearby after failing to get a taxi.

He was struck by a car travelling on the N25, the main Cork to Waterford road, at around 5.15am.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 20s, contacted the emergency services and the man was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

It is understood the man, who is originally from Tulla in Co Clare, had been living for a number of years in New Zealand and had travelled home for the wedding.

Gardaí have appealed to anyone who may have travelled the road at about 5am or witnessed the incident to contact Midleton Garda Station on 021-4621550.
