Warning on energy levy

THE ENERGY regulator has been warned that jobs may be cut at multinational companies if it presses ahead with a proposed public service levy on all electricity bills.

The Commission for Energy Regulation's proposed levy could add €86m to industrial electricity bills to support green energy and peat-fired generating plants. Many of the industrial electricity customers that would pay the levy are multinationals with large workforces.

The IDA, meanwhile, expects to create between 6,000 and 10,000 jobs this year, compared to 4,500 last year.
