Wallace calls for more tax scrutiny

TAX cheat TD Mick Wallace wants closer scrutiny of the taxes paid by businesses.

He has asked Finance Minister Michael Noonan to "change how the world works".

Mr Wallace quizzed the minister on a US Congress committee's finding that Microsoft used Irish subsidiaries to reduce its US tax bill by €2.4bn last year.

Mr Wallace evaded paying €1.4m in VAT and now owes the Revenue Commissioners €2.1m.

Mr Noonan merely said the topic of international corporation tax rates was "interesting", and accused Fianna Fail spokesman Michael McGrath of engaging in "bluff" by pretending there is a painless way of raising tax by abandoning the property tax.
