VHI's €228m on cancer

VHI Healthcare spent €228m last year to fund cancer medical care and expenses for customers, it has revealed.

The announcement came as men around the country participate in the annual Movember cancer fundraising and awareness campaign.

Vhi Healthcare attributes the high spend on cancer treatment to the ongoing improvements in medical techniques, new technology, new drugs and the increased volume of medical care being accessed by customers.

The data analysis shows cancer related medical care continues to be the biggest area of expenditure for VHI, with 19pc of all claims paid relating to cancer care in 2011.

The cancer types which incurred the most cost included breast cancer (€41.6m for 2,622 customers), colorectal cancer (€35.2m for 1,960 customers) and prostate cancer (€20.4m for 2,600 customers).
