VHI spent €1.2bn after big cutback

VHI Healthcare spent more than €1.23bn last year to fund the healthcare and medical expenses nationwide.

The company said it saved almost €7m after its special investigation unit discovered incorrect or inappropriate invoicing.

And hospital consultants earned €85,956 on average in payments for treating private patients with VHI coverage last year.

But the figure is significantly less than in 2010, where the average consultant payout by VHI was listed at €95,474.

The earnings from VHI for consultants is in addition to their earnings if they are also in public practice, in addition to earnings from other health insurers. Cancer-related care remains the largest area of cost, with ¤228.5m paid out during the year.
