TRANSPORT Minister Leo Varadkar wants the Garda Ombudsman to investigate the penalty points' saga.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) wants an independent investigation into the controversy after a garda probe found no evidence of corruption in relation to penalty points being wiped from people's licences.
Mr Varadkar is in favour of the Garda Ombudsman Commission investigation.
"The gardai took this seriously. There wouldn't be disciplinary action if they hadn't and they have proposed new procedures to tighten up the system," Mr Varadkar (inset) said.
Speaking on RTE's Morning Ireland, Mr Varadkar added: "I think it is very important that the public does have confidence in the system. The law needs to be enforced in the same way for everyone."
