US visa boost plans

CHANGES to the US H-1B visa are likely to lure more skilled graduates from Ireland, particularly in the ICT sector.

Migration specialists at VisaFirst.com said that there could be some competition between the Irish Government and US companies.

"In 2012 alone, 1,120 Irish workers were granted H1 visas," said Edwina Shanahan. "US officials have now announced that they will increase the number of these visas by 69pc to 110,000.

"We would foresee that Irish workers will get a sizeable chunk of these new visas."

The H-1B is a non-immigrant visa that allows employers temporarily to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations.
