US ANTI-abortion activists are campaigning against the Taoiseach being awarded an honorary degree by a Catholic university in Boston.

Enda Kenny may get a noisy reception from pro-lifers at Boston College on May 20 where it has been planned he receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.

It is planned that Mr Kenny will also be invited to be the commencement speaker at the college and receive the degree from college president Fr William P Leahy.

A demonstration by activists may yet be orchestrated by militant groups seeking to support Irish pro-life groups who are opposed to the planned abortion legislation.

A letter written on behalf of the groups calls for "pro-abortion Enda Kenny be disinvited" by Boston College.

They are urging supporters to contact Boston Cardinal Sean O'Malley and Pope Francis to object and claim Kenny is "not a fit person" to be honoured by the college.

A spokeswoman for the Department of the Taoiseach told the Herald that Mr Kenny would be in Boston from May 18 to 20 but his itinerary had not yet been finalised.
