Urban beach and pool plans for Dun Laoghaire

A HEATED floating outdoor swimming pool is planned for Dun Laoghaire.

Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company (DLHC) plans to build the new attraction to the southside town and hope it will be open by summer 2015.

It includes a seating area and pool containing heated and treated seawater, designed on a converted river barge which will be located within the harbour.

The barge will also house an 'urban beach', with a second one located alongside the floating structure, on Berth 1 adjacent to the East Pier.

The concept is closely modelled on the Badeschiff facility in Berlin.

Ticket prices are likely to be about €7 per adult, and the DLHC believes it could attract 140,000 visitors a year, generating €1m for the local economy.

Changing and toilet facilities and a cafe are also included in the plan.

Tim Ryan, operations manager with DLHC, said: "The development of a floating swimming pool and urban beach is an exciting and innovative element of the masterplan for Dun Laoghaire Harbour, published in 2011.

"It is intended that the new facility will act as a significant public amenity and tourist attraction, and will create a hub of activity within the harbour.

"A feasibility study for this project was conducted in 2012, and a project design team was appointed earlier this year."

SUMMER 2015

"We are hoping to submit a planning application in October or early November, with a view to having the new facility operational by the summer of 2015," Mr Ryan said.

Planning permission will be sought from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Co Council, and its decision can be appealed to An Bord Pleanala.

It is hoped to have a planning decision by early next year, and the project will be put out to tender, meaning Irish companies can bid to build the pool and beach.

An entrance fee will include options for adults, children and family tickets, and the overall project is expected to cost €2.5m.

The plans will be published today, and the public are being asked to submit comments by September 27 via email to consultation@dlharbour.ie or by post to Urban Beach Design Team, Dun Laoghaire Harbour Company, Harbour Lodge, Crofton Road, Dun Laoghaire.
