Up to 20,000 retail jobs

UP to 20,000 jobs could be created in the retail industry if the Government presses ahead with plans to scrap upward-only rent reviews.

Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) said 14 new positions per company could be created along with securing 45 positions in affected retailing firms.

Justice Minister Alan Shatter (above) said he has forwarded to the Attorney General outline proposals to scrap upward-only rent reviews on existing retail leases.

A REI survey of 187 retailers also found that two-thirds of retailers expect the Government to improve consumer sentiment.
