Uninsured motorist gets 40-year driving ban

AN UNINSURED driver with a string of previous no-insurance convictions has been put off the road for 40 years.

Derek Pegnam (29) was told by a judge that he faces going to jail if he is caught driving without insurance again.

Judge John Coughlan fined Pegnam €500 and disqualified him from driving for 40 years.

The defendant, of Verschoyle Drive, Tallaght, had admitted before Tallaght District Court to driving without insurance at Citywest Road, Tallaght, on May 11, 2010.

The court heard he has seven previous convictions for driving without insurance.

Defence lawyer George Burns said Pegnam had stayed out of trouble ever since this incident.

Imposing the lengthy ban, Judge Coughlan said Pegnam was "a lucky man" that he was not going to jail.
