UCD STUDENT yacht team aiming for cup victory

UCD-Team Ireland is setting sail for the Student Yachting World Cup in France, thanks to a sponsorship deal from Energia.

Energia Renewables is lending its support to the team of seven UCD students who are representing Ireland at next week's international competition.

The regatta will see more than 150 competitors representing 15 countries for the biggest prize in the world of university yachting.

UCD-Team Ireland won the regatta when it was previously held in La Rochelle in 2012. Since early summer, the team has been training in Dublin Bay in a J80 sailing boat identical to the craft being used for this year's championships.

Denis McCarthy, UCD's key account manager at Energia, said: "Energia is delighted to be powering the efforts of UCD-Team Ireland. Hopefully, it will be a lucky return to La Rochelle for them."

The team is also working closely with UCD Sport with logistics and preparation both on and off the water, as well as the Irish Universities Sailing Association.

The Student Yachting World Cup is an event organised every year in France by students for students. Each country is represented by one team, which also represents its university or school.
