The victim was punched and kicked at the junction of Dame Street and South Great George's Street at about 3.30am.

He was taken to St James's Hospital for treatment where his condition was described as serious. However, he was expected to survive.

Two males were detained and taken to Pearse Street Garda Station for questioning where they remained today. The scene remained sealed off this morning and an umbrella was taken away for examination.
