Two killed, one badly injured in accidents

TWO people have died and a third was in a critical condition in hospital following weekend road accidents.

One of the fatalities occurred when a woman in her early 60s, Breege O'Carolan, was out walking on Saturday evening.

Mrs O'Carolan, of Glebe Street in Mohill, Co Leitrim, was struck by a car on the R201 on the outskirts of the village.

She was rushed by ambulance to Sligo General Hospital but pronounced dead on arrival.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses to the accident, which happened shortly after 5pm.

Mrs O'Carolan and her husband Michael ran the popular village pub, O'Carolan's, on Glebe Street, in Mohill.

The driver of the car involved in the collision was not injured. Gardai at Carrick-on-Shannon station can be contacted on (071) 9620021.


And in Co Galway, a man was killed in a single-car collision shortly before at 5.40am yesterday morning.

Michael Conlon (65) died after his car struck traffic lights in the village of Barna.

Gardai in Salthill have appealed for any witnesses to come forward. They can be contacted on (091) 514720.

Meanwhile, a 20-year-old man was in a critical condition at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin following a single-vehicle crash.

The young man was a passenger in a car which drove into a ditch outside Loughrea on the N66, Loughrea to Gort road at about 4.30am yesterday.

The driver and another passenger sustained minor injuries.
