Two die as car hits tree in heavy rain

Two young men have died in a car accident in Co Kildare last night.

The accident happened on the road between Carbury and Allenwood at Killina in severe weather conditions around 8pm.

The car in which the two men were travelling hit a tree.

There was no other vehicle involved.

Three fire tenders and two ambulances were dispatched from Offaly fire station to attend the scene.

Gardai confirmed that two people had died in the collision.

Independent Kildare Cllr Willie Crowley described weather conditions in the area at the time as "extremely dangerous.

"The weather was dreadful. It descended about 6.30pm and got really dark with very heavy rain.

"The conditions were very, very bad. It was a tragic accident," he added.

The road was closed to traffic as the emergency services worked at the scene.
