Two arrested in dawn raids over murder of corrupt former garda

DETECTIVES arrested two middle-aged suspects in dawn raids today in relation to the savage gun murder of a corrupt former garda who was blasted to death with a shotgun at his rural home.

The duo were "well known" to John Kerins (49) – the garda turned criminal who was murdered at his home near Baileborough, Co Cavan, last November, according to senior sources.

The arrested men are brothers who are from the Baileboro area – it is understood that they have "loose links" to the INLA.

A senior source said: "These are very significant arrests – these men are believed to be central to this murder investigation.

"They are well known for serious criminality in the border area."

The men are being detained and questioned at Carrickmacross Garda Station in Co Monaghan, while a number of detailed searches of properties were still taking place in the Baileboro area.

At the time of going to press, five properties had been searched but no drugs or cash had been seized from these houses.

John Kerins suffered horrific fatal facial injuries when he was blasted at close range by a shotgun as he sat in his home at Cornaveagh, Baileborough.

The former garda is believed to have been murdered because of fears he could give gardai information about the suspected murder of his former close associate Gerard Daly.
