A MAJOR Dublin crime gang is reeling after gardai seized almost €250,000 worth of drugs along with 250 rounds of ammunition and a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun.
Two men, aged 20 and 58, were arrested during the operation yesterday at the Ryebrook Business Park at Leixlip, Co Kildare, which has been described as "very significant".
Cocaine, heroin, cannabis herb and resin were seized during the operation.
Sources have revealed that neither of the men have lengthy criminal records and are not big players in the organised crime scene.
One suspect is from Leixlip while the other is from the Montpelier Park estate in north inner city Dublin.
A senior source said the bust is linked to a number of other drugs seizures against a north Dublin criminal gang over the past six months by the Garda National Drugs Unit (GNDU).
"It is part of an ongoing, intelligence-led operation – this seizure is very significant," a source explained last night.
Local sources in Leixlip said they were shocked that the 20-year-old was arrested in relation to such a huge haul.
"This young fella might have been stopped and searched a few times and is known as a bit of a hash smoker but that was it before now – he actually comes from a very good local family," said a local source.
"The real focus of this operation is the older Dublin man and his associates."
The arrested duo were still being questioned last night at Leixlip Garda Station.
A garda spokesperson said: "Detectives from the Garda National Drugs Unit carried out a surveillance operation on Tuesday.
"A number of follow-up searches took place yesterday and two kilos of cannabis herb worth €40,000, four kilos of cannabis resin worth €24,000, one and a half kilos of powder believed to be coke worth €105,000, half a kilo of heroin worth €75,000 and drug paraphernalia were seized along with over 250 rounds of ammunition and a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun."
In a separate operation in Tallaght, south Dublin, yesterday gardai seized cannabis worth €110,000.
At around 7.45am, gardai conducted a planned search of a house in the Donomore Avenue area of Tallaght.
The discovery of the cannabis resin was as part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Tallaght area of Dublin.
A man (41) and a woman (37) were arrested and were still being detained last night at Rathfarnham Garda station.
