Twink hit musical caught in legal row

TWINK'S producer, RTE star Robert C Kelly, has been hit with a legal claim totalling more than €61,000.

A bitter dispute has erupted behind the scenes of Menopause the Musical, and is threatening to bring the curtain down on Ireland's biggest-grossing show.

The Herald can reveal how the show's original creator Jeanie Linders alleges that Mr Kelly has breached the terms of his contract with her and failed to pay her sufficient royalties.

Originally starring Twink, aka Adele King, and Linda Martin, the musical has broken all previous box-office records since first showing here in 2007.

Bitter

One of Ireland's best-known producers, Mr Kelly has been behind the show from the start and was a judge on this year's RTE show Fame: The Musical.

However, the future of the stage show now looks uncertain after the bitter dispute erupted this weekend between him and its original author.

The American showbiz veteran has now enlisted the services of Dublin-based McCann Fitzgerald solicitors.

She is claiming in her letter, sent on behalf of TAP Productions in London, that she is due €54,323 in royalties from the Irish shows of her musical.

She claims a further $10,000 (€7,700) is due her from another agreement made with Mr Kelly on May 8, 2009. The writer believes she's owed €39,323 from the nationwide tour of the production and €15,000 from its sell-out Dublin run in the Tivoli.

The legal letter, which has been seen by the Herald, states: "As you are aware, there is a minimum weekly payment required in relation to performances in Ireland. This sum was not paid to our client in relation to any week of the Dublin tour."

It goes on to state in a separate issue that there is doubt over the royalty figures provided by Mr Kelly and the Tivoli Theatre. Her solicitors have given Mr Kelly until Wednesday to settle the bill.
