TRIBUTES have been paid to former Evening Herald editor Brian Quinn, who has died aged 88.
Mr Quinn joined Independent Newspapers in 1948 and served in a variety of roles during his 40-year career.
He was editor of this newspaper from 1969 until 1976 and retired in 1988.
Michael Denieffe, former managing editor of Independent Newspapers, said the Dubliner was "a gentleman".
He said Mr Quinn had guided the Herald during an era when the city had two competing evening papers, the Evening Herald and the Evening Press.
He is survived by his daughters Anne, Oonagh and Kathryn and son David, a columnist with the Irish Independent and a founder of the Iona Institute.
His funeral mass is tomorrow at the Church of St John the Baptist, Clontarf Road, at 10am.
