Tribute paid to Justice Budd

WARM tributes have been paid to High Court judge Mr Justice Declan Budd, who has retired after 20 years.

On the judge's final appearance at the Court of Criminal Appeal, Senior Counsel Michael O'Higgins said that proceedings before Mr Justice Budd (68) were "bywords" for kindness and courtesy.

Mr O'Higgins said Mr Justice Budd's departure from the bench was deeply regretted. Mr Justice Budd was appointed as a High Court Judge in 1991 and began sitting at the Court of Criminal appeal in 2008.

Girl (9) stuck in wreck for days

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl pinned in a wrecked car for almost two days ate Pop-Tarts and drank energy drinks to survive the crash that killed her father.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Jordan Landon was airlifted to hospital on Sunday after rescue teams cut her out of the car that had been upside down in a culvert since Friday.

Police called the girl "heroic". She is expected to fully recover.

31 whales die in shallow waters

THIRTY-one whales have died after becoming stranded near the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island.

Another 34 whales are stuck in shallow water near Farewell Spit in Golden Bay.

The whales won't be rescued because they are in a remote and dangerous location, said Department of Conservation Golden Bay area manager John Mason.

"All we can do is monitor them. I'm not optimistic that they're going to get back to sea but we certainly hope that they make it," he said.

LaBelle 'threw water at mum'

R&B diva Patti LaBelle hurled a bottle of water at a woman and her 18-month-old daughter after a row in New York, claims a lawsuit filed yesterday.

Kevin and Roseanna Monk's lawyer said LaBelle chastised Mrs Monk for letting the toddler take some steps away from her mother.

After Mrs Monk scooped up the child and told LaBelle it was none of her business, the singer threw water on them from a bottle she was carrying and then launched into an obscenity-filled tirade, he said.
