Tourism rise

Visitors from the Republic accounted for 40pc of all holidaymakers in the North, according to new figures.

The Northern Ireland Tourist Board is to spend £1m (€1.13m) on marketing this spring.

The number of holidaymakers from the south rose to an estimated 215,000 during 2009, an increase of 39pc compared to the previous year.

In total, visitors from the Republic pumped in the region of £67m (€76m) into the Northern Ireland economy last year, while the total number of domestic trips within Northern Ireland injected a further £190m (€216m).
