Topless drunk 'squared up' to fight garda at gig

A CONCERT-GOER who "squared up to" a garda for a fight while topless at the 02 arena has insisted he "never took a drug in his life".

Michael McDonagh (20) had downed a large amount of vodka before the incident that led to his arrest at the Tiesto and Calvin Harris concert last year, Dublin District Court heard.

Judge Ann Watkin remarked that people who drank too much often caused more trouble for the gardai than those who took drugs, and adjourned the case for a probation report.

McDonagh, with an address at Carton Road, Poppintree, Ballymun, pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive and insulting behaviour to cause a breach of the peace at the O2.

The court heard the incident happened on December 19 last at 11.45pm.

A garda on duty at the concert saw the accused acting aggressively, squaring up to other people to fight.

His t-shirt was off and he also squared up to the garda when approached.

McDonagh had to be physically restrained and arrested, but calmed down when he got back to the garda station. "I believe there was some sort of substance involved," the garda told the court.

McDonagh had been at the concert on the night and drank "a large amount of vodka", his lawyer said.

The prosecuting garda said he believed it was "something else" because of the "nature of the concert - it was a dance concert".

Judge Watkin said in her experience, people who took drugs like ecstasy were less trouble to the gardai than people who drank too much. The garda said the accused had fallen asleep almost immediately on being put in a cell at the station.

McDonagh was "not a drinker" and this may have been why it affected him in the way it did, his lawyer said.

"He has never taken a drug in his life," he added.

The case was adjourned.
